Schanschieffs, Oakham School

A+D Studio were commissioned by Oakham School to redesign the external areas of Schanschieffs campus at Oakham School.

The school was concerned that the paths taken by pupils and vehicles are not separated sufficiently and therefore there is a risk of accidents, this is a particular hazard at times when parents drop off and collect pupils.

We studied the current arrangement and proposed a replanning of vehicle and pedestrian routes, additional car parking and the relocation of a hard-play area. This included a coach lay-by safely separate from the pupils' daily paths and a Cor-Ten clad pick-up shelter where pupils can wait for their parents and socialise under cover and in safety.

The relocation of the hard-play area away from vehicle movements gives pupils an opportunity for relaxing study, playing basketball or simply chilling out.

New landscaping, external lighting by iGuzzini and areas for pupils to display art and Design and technology projects complete the proposals.

The first phase providing the main car park, new access and improved lighting by iGuzzini was completed successfully by Kenway Construction of Loughborough in time for the September 2014 term.
